A Whale of a Good Time in winter!

by Summer Fey Foovay

Winter vacations can be as much or even more of an adventure than the more common summer vacation. In fact, a winter vacation seems far more sensible to me – as I live in a part of the U.S. that is downright unpleasant in the winter. Along with many other folks, I suffer the “winter blues”.

What could be more fun and uplifting than a vacation in Southern California in December. First of all, it is a lot warmer than it is here! But the best reason to go to San Diego or Los Angeles or anywhere along the Baja coast in winter is that you can take a whale watching cruise.

There are a variety of cruises available, many of which require no reservations at all, and the prices are very reasonable. This is also a family friendly vacation, and what better way to show your children the awesome wonders of nature than to get them alongside a Blue Whale during their great migration. Many other forms of marine life are also commonly seen on the cruises, including killer whales, and the ever popular dolphins.

The cruise boats offer every comfort, snacks, beverages, and restrooms. Most of the cruises are relatively short, ranging around two to two and a half hours. This leaves you plenty of time to visit other attractions in the area, such as the San Diego Zoo or Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, or the many attractions in Los Angeles.

A short vacation in Southern California might be just the thing to cure the winter blues, without blowing the budget.
